Keller provided the project with a pile technique that would performance consistently under a high dead load scenario, in variable ground conditions

The project

To provide foundation support for acid storage tanks, bund slab and hardstand areas at the Sun Metals facility located within the Townsville Port precinct.  The scope involved design and construction of 434No. enlarged base ‘franki’ piles, as well as the civil earthworks for the piling platform and overall site preparation.

The challenge

The geotechnical conditions were quite variable and with limited borehole information. The client had a tight time frame for project delivery.  The tank loadings and hardstand area had a high dead load component.

The solution

Use the geotechnical advantage of the enlarged base ‘franki’ pile to distribute pile load to the founding material under a much lower stress than other conventional techniques.  Historical static load tests from nearby were used to support the design, and the ‘franki’ pile enabled Keller to offer the client a lump sum solution with regard to pile length risk.

By including the platform earthworks in Keller’s package the client saved time upfront in their tender process, and gained benefit by having Keller responsible for site co-ordination of day to day earthworks activities, deliveries, and piling progress.
