Stabilised deep mine shafts up to ~220m below ground, while delivering ~100,000m3 of grout across three sites efficiently
The project
BriswestHoldings developed land near Ipswich for a new industrial estate comprising multiple warehouse facilities. The site was located above a decommissioned coal mine, with a large network of intact mine shafts beneath the footprint. Keller was engaged to stabilisethe ground by filling the mine shafts, enabling safe development of the overlying industrial estate.
The challenge
A complex network of mine shafts extended across three sites, requiring treatment of approximately 100,000m³ of grout. The depth and geometry of the shafts created challenges in accurately targeting the voids and controlling grout spread. The remote and distributed nature of the sites required an efficient delivery strategy to manage logistics and maintain productivity.
The solution
Keller developed a targeted grouting methodology, including centralising the grout batching plant to efficiently service all three sites without relocation. Custom drilling techniques and equipment were used to accurately locate and treat mine shafts to depths of approximately 220m.Barrier grouting was installed around the site extents to contain grout within defined boundaries and ensure controlled fill of the void network.
