As part of the Sydney Metro Project, Central Station is undergoing a new entrance and central walk in a significant upgrade. Our scope included installation of a contiguous piled retaining wall to allow the client to excavate two 15m x 5m staircase shafts. Keller recommended a system of micro piles, installed through the platforms.
The two platforms, one bustling with rush-hour commuters and the other serving the busy airport line, had to remain open during the works. The Keller crew was given an enclosed, hoarded-off work zone on the platform, roughly 6m by 20m, to carry out the daytime works under a 3m restricted headroom. All plant, equipment, materials and spoils had to be brought in and out on a hi-rail flatbed truck at night.
To resource the job properly, Keller purchased Hütte Casagrande 202 and 203 machines, offering greater reliability, performance and noise reduction from the new machines. We worked openly and collaboratively throughout the project with Laing O’Rourke’s site team to manage the issues of access and possession times resulting in the successful delivery of this project.
