Keller delivered a rigid inclusion ground improvement solution to support critical infrastructure.
The project
The project involved installing rigid inclusions for a number of low-rise structures at the Damascus Barracks site, which was intended as a 1000-bed COVID facility during the epidemic. Our scope included 2,225 columns, totaling 35,400lm of rigid inclusions as a ground improvement solution for this critical project.
The challenge
Additional geotechnical investigations determined longer column lengths were required which would impact the design and our plant selection. The urgency of the program would require day and night shifts to be managed and access to our work areas to ensure no delays. Additionally, staff testing positive for Covid required efficient resource planning to avoid any delays.
The solution
With Keller’s experience with rigid inclusions, warehouses and working around airport locations meant that we could provide value engineering in the design, recommending a smaller diameter column and a static load testing regime which provided program advances. Our extensive range of plant and resources provided a flexible solution when an alternative rig was required to achieve the longer column lengths and when we needed to replace Covid-positive team members without disruption to the project.
